September Wrap-Up and October TBR // Wow school really slapped me this month and it’s about to backhand me too

Greetings readers!

Well, hi. It’s been a while, hasn’t it. We are well into October and this is my first post of the month. Huh. Well the reason why is pretty much in the title of the post.

It’s that time of the year, it’s the mid-term time of year when readings, assignments and tests all start piling up and try to drown you. Then there is this very small grace period where you can breathe until the pile starts growing again. That grace period just so happens to be this week.

So I have to get in all my blogging in nowww.

That means starting by wrapping up last month!

I have ~thoughts~ on this very highly anticipated book, it did not go exactly as planned. Review to come.

Q: What 2020 books are on your radar?

I CANNOT EXPRESS TO YOU GUYS HOW EXCITED I WAS WHEN THIS POPPED UP IN MY MAIL ON MONDAY!

I mean... LOOK AT THE COVER!

WOVEN IN MOONLIGHT by @isabelwriter09 is a a YA Bolivian fantasy about magic, romance and revolución!!! While the announcement for this book came out ages ago and the pub date was pushed we are slowly inching towards its release! I am very grateful for having received an advanced copy and I hope to dive into this #HispanicHeritageMonth! (Because of course!) Many thanks to @mandagroup for the ARC!

The Haul

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
A Treason of Thorns by Laura E. Weymouth

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

HAPPY (Belated) BOOK BIRTHDAY TO @lauraeweymouth and her new novel, A TREASON OF THORNS!

Naturally (because I suck) I'm two days late to the party, but I am still within release week so it's all good!

I cannot express how much I loved Weymouth's debut novel, The Light Between Worlds (its AMAZING) so I am very much hoping to love this one just as much!

It has a magical house. I mean. A. Magical. House. The only thing that could possibly be as great as a magical wardrobe is a MAGICAL HOUSE!

3 Year Bloggaversary!

Aug 31, I celebrated 3 years on WordPress. Can you believe it! I’ve been doing this for three years already and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon! I am so very thankful for each and every one of you who follow and read my posts! For those who comment and send me so much love, I thank you! To the publishers who entrust me with books, I thank you! To the authors who send me requests and grant my requests, I thank you! I have learned a lot over the three years and I look forward to seeing what the next year has in store.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

I have slowly been making my way through my TBR for HHM. I have gotten through 2 of the 4 books I have planned! I’ve also added a lot more Latinx books to by Want-to-Read list! There are so many good books coming our wayyyy!

I have also been posting a lot on Instagram lately…And if you follow me you’ll know that I had a little reveal….I’ll post it here to, just for my lovely blogger frens.

Q: What is your favourite genre?
Oh look, it's me.

I figured that if I were to ever "show my face" on here it woud have to be during #HispanicHeritageMonth!
Today's featured book is Nocturna by Maya Motayne! It's the first ever Latinx fantasy that I read, based specifically on Dominican culture, and I'm very happy I enjoyed it! I'm even more glad I got to meet Maya when she came to Toronto earlier this year!

If there is one thing I hope to see in the bookish universe one day, it's a Latinx fantasy based on Salvadoran culture! I can only imagine what it could be like, but I'm very hopeful that one day I'll get that book! Who wouldn't wish to see their own culture reflected in their favourite genre?

Q: What power would you want to have as a witch?

It's almost October and you know what that means? Spooky season! 👻

I love Halloween and all the magic, myth and mayhem that comes with it. I used to dress up as a witch almost every year as a kid and it soon became my staple costume!

I can't wait for the movies to start playing on TV. Since I'm not a horror fan, I really prefer the cheesy, magical movies of Disney Channel 😂 I really can't do scary, I just like the magic of the season.

I'm curious if you have a favourite Halloween movie?

I'm super excited to pick up this book very soon! A Dash of Trouble features a family of witches, delicious treats, magic and mayhem so I know it will sweep me off my feet!

The Regular TBR–My Dedication to Penguin Teen CA

The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh
Grave Maidens by Kelly Coon
A River of Royal Blood by Amanda by Amanda Joy
Fireborne by Rosaria Munda
Song of a Crimson Flower by Julie C. Dao

Q: What was your first vampire read?

I was about 12 years old when I read my first vampire book. It was called Ruling Passion, a bind up of the first three books in Alyxandra Harvey's Drake Chronicles.

You can bet that I got obsessed real quick. I was never a fan of the main main character but her best friend, Lucy was great. And I'm like 80% sure it's set in Canada. This is a series I still think about to this day. I never quite finished them but I've had the nostalgic feeling of wanting to reread them, but it's six books long with lots of novellas.

ON ANOTHER NOTE: Vampire YA is making a comeback and I have my hands on a coveted ARC of The Beautiful by @reneeahdieh!!! (Many thanks to @penguinteenca for making this possible)
I can't wait to be whisked away my Renée's work again!

Happy reading!

Clearly I Think Too Highly of Myself| A Look Back on my 2018 goals and setting myself up for 2019

Greetings readers!

Hehehehehehehehehe ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm welllll….uhhh let’s see, where do we begin?

Well, I, um made reading goals for 2018 last year. And the time has come to reflect on how I have done. And well, while I can say that I tried…if I tried my absolute best and hardest….that is another question.

The Old Goals and the Results

1. Read My Shelves

jo-ann smile GIF by RTL 5

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Well…………………………………………………………………………..

This goal really sucked because I didn’t outline specific books I had in mind that I wanted to read, but now that I think clearly about it…I just didn’t get to any of them. No. That’s false, I just didn’t get to many.

Despite the two series rereads that I did (The Penderwicks and Ember Quartet (1-2)), the books that I read this year (that were not ARCs or review books) in total is 9 and the first 12 issues of the Fence comics.

Doesn’t seem that bad, right? But in reality I didn’t get to the books I really wanted to reads on my shelves.

Roshani Chokshi’s books — didn’t happen, but I practically own them all
V.E. Schwab — again I have her Shades of Magic trilogy and Vicious, but didn’t read them
The DC Icons series — own them all, all unread!
And more…

I really slacked with this goal for *reasons* and that must be rectified.

2. Read 25 debuts

gordon ramsay cooking GIF by Masterchef

12 / 25 read debuts books of 2018

S.T.A.G.S. by M.A. Bennett
Blood and Sand by C.V. Wyk
The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
The Calculus of Change by Jessie Hilb
Sleight by Jennifer Sommersby
Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian
The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth
Mirage by Somiaya Daud
Game of Secrets by Kim Foster
Kiss of the Royal by Lindsey Duga
Charlie Hernandez and the League of Shadows by Ryan Calejo
Lulu the Broadway Mouse by Jenna Gavigan

So like half of this goal was reached. I don’t know what I was thinking with the number 25 to be honest. Stupid past-Rendz.

3. Gain those 1000 followers

no way smh GIF

Current Follower count: 680

No. Didn’t happen. I am terrible at interacting, that is all on me.

I took several unannounced breaks. I didn’t blog hop weekly like I said I would. I tend to not comment on a lot of things, shame on me. And I was gonna host a giveaway and instead spent the money on myself, bigger shame on me.

4. Manage my book money “better”

tiff time lol GIF by Originals

Total money spent: ~$230

This actually hurts my soul a little. Holy cannoli I spent over $200 on books this year alone. Yikes. I mean considering how many books I got for free (I love you my dearest Canadian publishers) this number is still little too high for me.

5. Expand My Genres

3 Thriller/Mystery: 2/3 – S.T.A.G.S., The Little Dog

3 Contemporary: 5/3 –Broken Beautiful Hearts, The Calculus of Change, A Prom to Remember, Save the Date, Tell Me No Lies

3 Historical Fiction: 3/3 – Blood and Sand, Game of Secrets, Kingdom of Ash and Soot

3 Romance: 1/3 – Crazy Rich Asians

Well, I at least surpassed my Contemporary goal which makes me very happy. As for the others…some of the books under those categories are a bit of a stretch. I really thought I would surpass the romance one, there have been some really intriguing ones that have been released this year, but alas fantasy seemed to topple my TBR again. (Which I am not upset about, but still)

Goals for 2019

1. Relax on the Requesting Game

This includes accepting solicited requests and actually requesting books for myself. I keep digging myself into holes that I have trouble getting out of.  And often it happens that I am no longer interested in reading the book I requested.

So for 2019, I will only be requesting books I actually, truly want to read and not just those I think I *may* want to read. This also means that I am not going to request so frequently so I have time to read what I have already received.

2. Read my ARCs on time

I have a track record of not reading books on time and it is getting bad. The amount of expired ARCs I have not read yet and other book requests is ridiculous. I really need to start making proper schedules and it all starts when I relax my requesting game.

3. Read My Shelves (But better)

I want to carve out time in the year and at least once a month to read the books I actually own. It probably won’t happen every month, but I want to at least try.

By the end of 2019, I should have read the following series on my shelves:

A Crown of Wishes and The Star-Touched Stories by Roshani Chokshi
Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab
The DC Icons series
Dreamer duology by Laini Taylor
The Conqueror’s Saga by Kiersten White

4. Get Involved

I’m not really going to focus on follower count this year, instead I am going to try to make actual friends on this world web. This definitely means more blog hopping from me and forcing myself to interact.

5. Make a trademark blog feature and keep up with it

I really want to bring something to this blog to make it more enticing and exciting. My creative well has been dull these past months so now I need to amp my game up and bring something new and exciting to this blog. Any ideas are welcome XD

6. Connections. Connections. Connections.

I also want to build stronger connections with the publishers I am already engaged with. This traces back to interaction, what seems to be the theme of these goals. I have one publisher in particular that I am looking to reach out to. Hopefully they say yes!

I am going to play 2019 by ear. There are so many fantastic books coming that are literally going to knock my socks off and I couldn’t be more excited. Seriously, this year is going to rock the book world and I couldn’t be more happier.

While I may have not met many of my 2018 goals, I am still so proud of how much I was able to accomplish. The amount of publishers I’ve reached out to, the books I have read and the work I have done.

Above all, I want to thank each and every one of you who have made this past year even more special. I hope to get to know you all a lot more this new year.

Let me know what you think! Did you meet your 2018 goals? Are you making any 2019 goals? What was your favourite moment from this past year (book or non-book related!)? What book(s) are you most excited for this 2019?!

Happy reading and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

May Wrap & June TBR | The Month in Which Things Got Crazy

Greetings readers!

Oh God.  This month has been a month. I found myself in a blog slump around mid May and avoided both writing for my blog and reading all of your wonderful posts. I really lacked motivation and….I was just plain lazy.

However, stuff happened this month. Ummmmm….I’m just gonna jump right in and…well…you’ll see.

wrap-up-3

May Wrap-Up

Books Rendz Read!

I got to a total of 10 read books this month! Four of them were rereads, but they were very necessary rereads, might I add. Frankly, I am very proud of what I was able to accomplish this month. Considering how I was feeling in terms of blogging.

The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall
1 – 4 series reread. I don’t have reviews for these, but a big post about this series is in the works! My advice: Read this series.

The Haul

This is where things get interesting. This month I hauled a total of…

*drum roll*

26 Books.

confused tituss burgess GIF by The Late Late Show with James Corden

Yeahh… 26 BOOKS! And most of them are physical!

shocked ellen degeneres GIF

I know what you are all thinking. RENDZ, HOW COULD YOU HAVE HAULED 26 BOOKS???? DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY THAT IS?????

This is where I actually tell you that I hardly spent money on books this month.

I’m hauling 26 books because I got lucky.

So what did I actually purchase this month!

Legendary by Stephanie Garber

That’s it….for the purchases….

spongebob biting his lip GIF

Publishing houses have been loving me as of late. Seriously! I have quite a haul of ARCs and attended quite a few events hosted by the following publishers! Canadians Pubs are just so amazing and awesome and if you ever get a chance to work with them I promise you will meet some lovely people!

NetGalley E-ARCs

Kiss of the Royal by Lindsey Duga
Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf

Raincoast ARCs

Whisper of the Tide by Sarah Tolscer
If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say by Leila Sales

Hachette Book Group CA ARCs

Flor and Miranda Steal the Show by Jennifer Torres
Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart

Thomas Allen & Son ARCs

Tell Me No Lies by Adele Griffin
Open Mic Night at Westminster Cemetery by

Penguin Random House CA

Smoke in the Sun by Renee Ahdieh (ARC)
Royals by Rachel Hawkins (ARC)
Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen (ARC)
We Are All That’s Left by Carrie Arcos (ARC)
The Game of Hope by Sandra Gulland (FC)
The Penderwicks At Last by Jeanne Birdsall (FC)

Then my luck was like a shining star in the night–bright and brilliant–because I won two more giveaways!

One for Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi and another for The Cruel Prince by Holly Black!

But nothing can compare to the giveaway I won in April. I was just on, Twitter minding my own business, scrolling away, when I stumbled upon a tweet by the Book Depository. It was World Story Telling Day and they gave you a chance to win big by telling your greatest story!

There were probably over 300 entries and I said to myself, I’ll just enter for the heck of it. So I told a quick story of what happened when I met and author for the first time (I’ll share it with you, one day). Two weeks later, I wake up to a message from the BD saying I won and get to spend £100 worth of books!!!

£100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If y’all knew how much money that is in CAD, you’d get my total elation!

So what books did I get!

A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows, A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Swchab
Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
The Shadow and Bone Trilogy Boxset by Leigh Bardugo
The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Graton

And I’m still waiting on one more book to show up! I cannot even believe my own luck! Seeing how my life hasn’t been the greatest these past couple months, I’d say that these winnings are probably the highlights of April and May!

That’s a total of 26 hauled books!

May was a really good month.

I really hit a blog slump in May. No inspiration or motivation came at me!

As for TV shows or movies I have been up to watching, again nothing. I started re-watching episodes of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody if that counts.

As for art things……well I have a surprise to show off soon, when I finish. And more TLC art is on its way!!!!

TBR

June TBR

Now here comes the hard part. I hauled so many books this past month, how on Earth am I ever going to be able to choose what to read?!

Answer: Priorities. As much as I want to be able to be free to read what I want, I made a commitment to these publishers and I am going to see it through!

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir (RIP me and everybody else too)

Flor and Miranda Steal the Show by Jennifer Torres

Tell Me No Lies by Adele Griffin

Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf

A Mark Unwilling by Candace Wondrak

And that’s it for now. I have a feeling I will not be able to get to everything just because school is being a disaster and I want to destroy it with every fiber of my being. But I can do it. I take the challenge.

April Wrap Up and May TBR

Greetings readers!

Life right now is in a lull for me. My university is literally trying to crush my will with anxiety. Even the promise of summer vacation does not cheer me. It’s just a big disaster right now, but I will not bore you with details.

The only silver lining I can really find in this mess right now is that I have had a lot more time to read and blog. I’m still never “ahead” of schedule, but I try. And I am making good progress! I actually made a blog calendar that looks all cutesy to keep me on track for this month, hopefully it does its job, so I can do my job.

Looking back at April, it was pretty good. I got in some good reads and even better buys!

This time around I’m going to add in a little update on my TV life too because PEOPLE. I have been watching some shows.

If you want to laugh, cry and get angry all in one sitting, you need to watch this show. If you hate laughing, crying and getting angry at the same time, you still NEED to watch this show. I HAVE BEEN BLOWN AWAY. It all started in a big Snap Chat group with my friends, they were raving about it and I was there like okay. Soon enough everyone in the chat watched it and I was the only one left. With some added pressure of everyone sending memes and I not getting the jokes, I went forth and watched the show.

I LOVE IT SO MUCH. AND I AM SO THANKFUL IT HAS BEEN RENEWED FOR A SEASON TWO BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE CRIED IF I WAS LEFT WITH THAT ENDING!

GO FORTH AND WATCH IT NOW. If you want a diverse, funny and a m a z i n g show to fill your hearts, WATCH ON MY BLOCK!!!

Then I watched Avengers: Infinity War

A Holiday / January Wrap-Up! & February TBR *With a Special Update!*

Greetings readers!

It’s time for one giant wrap-up! I’m talking 3 months worth of data that I have to write about! You see I have not done one of these wrap-ups since October, so today I’m going to be covering November, December and January!

Way back in November-December I had to take a small hiatus because school had taken over Real Life-Rendz so I (Rendz) had to back off a bit. *Side note: Real Life-Rendz did super well on her exams, thank you very much* So while I didn’t read a lot in those two months, I did have this huge Holiday TBR that I wanted to get to and I was able to get through *some of it*.

This might be a long post, but there is something special at the end I hope you all partake in!

February TBR!

I have quite a few things planned for February before mid-terms hit me! I plan on reading:

Wires and Nerve Vol. 2  by Marissa Meyer

Immortal Reign by Morgan Rhodes (A finally I am emotionally not prepared for!)

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

A Possibility of Whales by Karen Rivers

The Calculus of Change by Jessie Hilb

Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope

Captain Guinevere by Clara Bennett

And perhaps Take Me to the Cat by Bryant A. Loney because I’ve been sleeping on this one for too long!

Special Thing // Fan Art Update:

So if you follow me on Twitter, you may of may not have seen that I finished a character set piece for one of my favourite books from last year, The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia! I drew the three main characters and shared it on twitter.

It’s not what I would say my best-best work, but I’m pretty proud of it and I had soooo much fun doing it!

Take a look right here!

An Elite | A Performer | A Witch

I also put a lot of work into my Lunar Chronicles character portraits. I have only three characters left! So as a special “Thank for sticking around until the end of this loooong post!” I want to share one of my finished characters on here!

BUT…I WANT YOU TO CHOOSE WHO I SHOW OFF!

Your options are:

Cinder or Kai or Scarlet or Wolf or Cress or Thorne

I will do a mini blog post about the character with the most votes! The vote will be open for two weeks! (I’ll give you some time to think and me some time to do touch ups!)

So tell me in a comment….Which character would you like to see?

Let me know what you think! How has your reading fared this past month (or months)? What book blew you away? What books did you buy? What book are you most looking forward to? Don’t forget to vote!!!!!!

Happy reading!

September Wrap Up, Haul & October TBR

Greetings readers!

September went by in such a blur. I can barely recall most of what I did this month…oh wait! Yes I can. School. School and some more……wait for it…..school.

-_-

Yeah, it’s been fun guys….*fake yay* September has been tough on Real-life Rendz and it doesn’t seem to be getting any easier. Starting university this month has been a roller coaster of emotions. Excitement, self-doubt, fear. These are all things I feel on a daily basis.

My reading month was good. I actually got a lot more done than I thought I would. Things are starting to slow down and I’m trying my best to keep up, but school is a priority and it’s taking over my life. That’s why I’m sporadic a lot of the time on blog, I take some breaks to blog-hop or write but most times I just need to sit and relax and do nothing.

Enough about me, let’s talk about bookish things!

wrap-up-3

Wrap-Up

What the heck did I read this month? Seriously I kind of forgot….bless the creators of Goodreads for keeping track for me!

This month I read…

Poison’s Kiss by Breanna Shields

I buddy read this with the amazing Mandy @ Book Princess Reviews. It was so much fun reading with her, even though this book didn’t quite meet our expectations. I ended giving it a 2.5 / 5 stars. You can read Mandy’s amazing review here because I’ll be honest the story is kind of a blur to me now….

Colorless by Rita Stradling

This was a Netgalley and it also turned out to be less than what I hoped for! It had such a cool concept and so much potential but it just fell flat to me. The beautiful cover definitely deceived me. My Full Review

Warcross by Marie Lu

I reviewed my ARC that I won in a Goodreads giveaway and I LOVED it! Hello! It’s by Marie Lu and she is my idol, I expected nothing but an intense and twisty read! She delivered perfectly and I cannot wait for the sequel! My Full Review

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas

A long awaited book. A book all about my baby Chaol! I wrote a rather long and ranty review because I had thoughts and I needed to vent! My Full Review

All The Wind In The World by Samantha Mabry

I am read this while I commuting to school, but sometimes I got dizzy reading on the bus so I have to do short reading bursts. Still I am enjoyed it, the ending left me feeling many things though! Review To Come.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

This is actually a book I’m read for one of my classes. And wow, I loved it. I will be honest, reading this book made me nervous. It is super hyped and deals with such an important topic that sometimes I would get overwhelmed even just by thinking about picking it up. But I’m so glad I did. It’s so important, heart-breaking and inspirational! Review To Come.

*I’m so sad I missed Angie while she was here in Toronto on tour! But SCHOOL is messing with me!!!*

That’s a total of six read books! A success, I would say!

The Haul

What did I get this month? The Month of Releases! Did I even go to the bookstore? No. Well I did go to my school bookstore, but that doesn’t count!

I did, however, send Kez to buy me Tower of Dawn from Indigo because they had a special edition!!! Oh and Strange the Dreamer came in the mail earlier in the month, which I won in a lovely giveaway hosted by Laura @ TheBookCorps

And I also pre-ordered Marissa Meyer’s Renegades and Wires & Nerve Vol 2. because I had a gift card to spend and I of course spent it on the Queen! Le duh!

The TBR

Well it’s going to be a long one, but I will definitely not make it to all of these reads. *Sad face*

The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Scion of the Fox by S.M. Beiko
Captain Guinevere by Clara Bennet
Last Star Burning by Caitlin Sangster
Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova (This will hopefully happen, as I want to buddy read it with Mandy @ BookPrincessReviews!)

I still have Gemina from the library…oh gosh I think it expires soon?? I will have to either return it or renew it…but it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting to it any time soon. *sad face*

So that’s my October. It looks like it is going to be quite busy for me in terms of school and blogging responsibilities, but I rather enjoy blogging so it’s not too much of a hastle (yet).

Let me know what you think! What was your favourite read from September? What did you buy during September: The Month of Releases!? What book are you most looking forward to this October (Another month of insane releases!)?

Happy reading!
