September Wrap-Up and October TBR // Wow school really slapped me this month and it’s about to backhand me too

Greetings readers!

Well, hi. It’s been a while, hasn’t it. We are well into October and this is my first post of the month. Huh. Well the reason why is pretty much in the title of the post.

It’s that time of the year, it’s the mid-term time of year when readings, assignments and tests all start piling up and try to drown you. Then there is this very small grace period where you can breathe until the pile starts growing again. That grace period just so happens to be this week.

So I have to get in all my blogging in nowww.

That means starting by wrapping up last month!

The Brilliant Dark-2

Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibañez
I have ~thoughts~ on this very highly anticipated book, it did not go exactly as planned. Review to come.

Q: What 2020 books are on your radar?

I CANNOT EXPRESS TO YOU GUYS HOW EXCITED I WAS WHEN THIS POPPED UP IN MY MAIL ON MONDAY!

I mean... LOOK AT THE COVER!

WOVEN IN MOONLIGHT by @isabelwriter09 is a a YA Bolivian fantasy about magic, romance and revolución!!! While the announcement for this book came out ages ago and the pub date was pushed we are slowly inching towards its release! I am very grateful for having received an advanced copy and I hope to dive into this #HispanicHeritageMonth! (Because of course!) Many thanks to @mandagroup for the ARC!

The Haul

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
A Treason of Thorns by Laura E. Weymouth

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

HAPPY (Belated) BOOK BIRTHDAY TO @lauraeweymouth and her new novel, A TREASON OF THORNS!

Naturally (because I suck) I'm two days late to the party, but I am still within release week so it's all good!

I cannot express how much I loved Weymouth's debut novel, The Light Between Worlds (its AMAZING) so I am very much hoping to love this one just as much!

It has a magical house. I mean. A. Magical. House. The only thing that could possibly be as great as a magical wardrobe is a MAGICAL HOUSE!

3 Year Bloggaversary!

Aug 31, I celebrated 3 years on WordPress. Can you believe it! I’ve been doing this for three years already and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon! I am so very thankful for each and every one of you who follow and read my posts! For those who comment and send me so much love, I thank you! To the publishers who entrust me with books, I thank you! To the authors who send me requests and grant my requests, I thank you! I have learned a lot over the three years and I look forward to seeing what the next year has in store.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations

I have slowly been making my way through my TBR for HHM. I have gotten through 2 of the 4 books I have planned! I’ve also added a lot more Latinx books to by Want-to-Read list! There are so many good books coming our wayyyy!

I have also been posting a lot on Instagram lately…And if you follow me you’ll know that I had a little reveal….I’ll post it here to, just for my lovely blogger frens.

Q: What is your favourite genre?
Oh look, it's me.

I figured that if I were to ever "show my face" on here it woud have to be during #HispanicHeritageMonth!
Today's featured book is Nocturna by Maya Motayne! It's the first ever Latinx fantasy that I read, based specifically on Dominican culture, and I'm very happy I enjoyed it! I'm even more glad I got to meet Maya when she came to Toronto earlier this year!

If there is one thing I hope to see in the bookish universe one day, it's a Latinx fantasy based on Salvadoran culture! I can only imagine what it could be like, but I'm very hopeful that one day I'll get that book! Who wouldn't wish to see their own culture reflected in their favourite genre?

Love Sugar Magic: A Dash of Trouble by Anna Meriano
Prime Meridian by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Q: What power would you want to have as a witch?

It's almost October and you know what that means? Spooky season! 👻

I love Halloween and all the magic, myth and mayhem that comes with it. I used to dress up as a witch almost every year as a kid and it soon became my staple costume!

I can't wait for the movies to start playing on TV. Since I'm not a horror fan, I really prefer the cheesy, magical movies of Disney Channel 😂 I really can't do scary, I just like the magic of the season.

I'm curious if you have a favourite Halloween movie?

I'm super excited to pick up this book very soon! A Dash of Trouble features a family of witches, delicious treats, magic and mayhem so I know it will sweep me off my feet!

The Regular TBR–My Dedication to Penguin Teen CA

The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh
Grave Maidens by Kelly Coon
A River of Royal Blood by Amanda by Amanda Joy
Fireborne by Rosaria Munda
Song of a Crimson Flower by Julie C. Dao

Q: What was your first vampire read?

I was about 12 years old when I read my first vampire book. It was called Ruling Passion, a bind up of the first three books in Alyxandra Harvey's Drake Chronicles.

You can bet that I got obsessed real quick. I was never a fan of the main main character but her best friend, Lucy was great. And I'm like 80% sure it's set in Canada. This is a series I still think about to this day. I never quite finished them but I've had the nostalgic feeling of wanting to reread them, but it's six books long with lots of novellas.

ON ANOTHER NOTE: Vampire YA is making a comeback and I have my hands on a coveted ARC of The Beautiful by @reneeahdieh!!! (Many thanks to @penguinteenca for making this possible)
I can't wait to be whisked away my Renée's work again!

Am I being overly ambitious again? Absolutely. Am I still gonna go for it? Absolutely.

Let me know what you think! How was your September? What were your favourite reads? What do you have planned for October?

Happy reading!

I Wrote Another Article!

I dug deep into a google search to collect a list of my top 10 most anticipated Latinx Books of 2019! You can read the article here!

rendz-article-2.png

I Art-ed!

If you guys don’t follow me on Instagram, you totally should! (@readingwithrendz). I often put updates on my little art adventures. Not all of them are cool, but I like to share my progress. My latest project was a Pinterest Girl that I did in soft pastel!

The following picture is the finished copy (but the lighting is so horrible)!

Aladdin 2019 was not trash. I repeat it was not trash!

Let me tell youuuuuu. I 100% thought this movie was not going to be any good from what I saw in the trailers, but I was so so wrong. it was actually quite fun and I liked how they retold the story. Even Will Smiths top-knot genie was okay with me. I mean it doesn’t beat out the original cartoon, but still! It was quite good!

I was hoodwinked, bamboozeled and betrayed by a Wattpad story!!!

So I was clearing out my iPod because I want to take it on my vacation and I was deleting all unnecessary apps. I stumbled upon my Wattpad app, which I made with the intention of writing but I never did, lol. So I was going to delete it, but then I saw this story cover which I was fairly intrigued by. I read the synopsis and knew that it wasn’t really my style, but I was curious. So I read this contemporary, arranged-marriage romance novel. And I gotta be honest…I was kinda loving it. Like it had its trashier bits and the grammar was off sometimes, but I really did like the characters and the plot direction. And I got to the end and thought wow this was great, until I read the epilogue. The epilogue ruined everything for me. It turned this happily ever after into a bittersweet end. And before you think what you might think, no. No one died. No one broke up. It was just how the author decided to craft their future in order to write a sequel that made me go: NO NO  NOOOOOOOO.

So I was mad. But I haven’t been able to find another arranged-marriage romance novel that works for me. So I continue to suffer.

I Went to the Penguin Teen Social!

Book worms of all kinds gathered at the PRHC HQ a couple of weeks ago to talk all things books. It was more of a mix and mingle than a sit-down thing. (There were not many places to sit at all actually) But I had a lot of fun being anti-social with my best bookish friend, Rezanne! I even got to meet Tanaz Bhathena and she singed my copy of The Beauty of the Moment!!!! I got to meet more authors, but I’m still thinking of writing an event recap for it so stay tuned!

THE BEAUTY OF THE MOMENT by @bhathenatanaz 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 What is your favourite contemporary novel? I'd have to say that as of last week, The Beauty of the Moment really has taken top spot for me in contemporaries. I know I don't read them often, but this one is definitely worthwhile! Today is my Blog Tour stop for this amazing book so please check out my full review! I’m thinking of taking another mood month. I’m just going to pick up whatever I feel like I want to try.

I’ve already read The Beholder by Anna Bright and it was quite the read! I’ll talk more about it in my review!

Q: Do you judge book covers? Because I do. And I have no shame in admitting it. 🙃 In other news... HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY TO @brightlyanna and her debut novel, THE BEHOLDER! I just finished reading this book on Sunday and I must say it was quite fun! There is a lot of drama and romance and tension to explore. Not to mention the drop dead gorgeous cover that comes along with it! April Wrap-Up & May TBR | I will forever be known as the blogger who posts wrap ups late late late UGH

Greetings readers!

April was a month. I already gave you kind of a round up in my last wrap up since it was posted half-way through April. So I guess I can update you on the last half.

It was a blur.

I don’t know what I did for the two weeks I was at home alone.

Literally I slept, woke up, ate, watched YouTube vids, ate, read, ate, TV, snacked, read, slept.

But all in all it really was a blur…

So let’s see what I actually did.

(yeah yeah Narnia is in 2nd let me live) There's just something about the Penderwicks that completely fills my heart with joy. Pure, good hearted happiness. And there are so many overtones of sadness in those books but I just can't help but feel happy when I reread them! *tweedles thumbs*

Let’s see

I got into Nature Documentaries.

For like the first week of my vacation I watched like three different documentaries on Birds of Paradise. Then I went down this rabbit hole where all I did was watch videos of birds–specifically the paradise ones and they were just so interesting. Freaky but interesting, I highly recommend you watch the doc made by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Then I went down this spiral of lion videos that were very unconventional. If you Google/Youtube “The Lion Whisperer” you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.

And then I watched a doc on tigers in an Australian zoo and it was really cute and fun and messy–in a good way!

I–like a billion other people–watched Avengers: Endgame

I liked it. I know there are problems with it and I see all the threads on Twitter, but frankly I had a really good time that night. The dudes sitting in front of me were super tall so for like the first ten minutes of the film I had to stretch my neck to see the whole screen but soon enough they sunk into their seats and I relaxed. But yeah I liked the movie.

The night before my Spanish Exam I plotted an entire YA contemporary series.

Three whole books briefly plotted in a single night of insomnia because I was nervous for my exam the next day. Turns out I really like the idea and maybe one day I’ll take myself up on it. But yeah me and contemporary…this should be fun.

I’m back in school

It’s an online summer course and I really should be doing that now instead of this, but future-Rendz can hate me later I guess.

May TBR

I feel like I just want to go with the flow this month.

Don’t get me wrong I have pressing reads and I will hopefully get to them, but I am tired of being tied down with release dates…and my shelves miss me. So May will be the month of ME. Maybe I’ll do some Twitter/Insta polls so you guys can help me pick out what I should read. There are many options to pick from and I am a bit overwhelmed, but so far this is what I’ve gotten to:

Q: What will be your final read of April? If everything goes according to plan, I should be able to squeeze in one more book before the end of the month. I'm hoping to get to We Rule the Night by Claire Eliza Bartlett which was published at the beginning of April so it's fitting I should read it in its debut month! The cover is so stunning I hope the inside it much the same! #WeRuletheNight #ClaireElizaBartlett #LittleBrownBooks #yabooks #books #reader #bookishcanadians #scifi #fantasy #youngadultbooks #igbooks #bookstagramer #aprilreads #mysisterisfinallydoneschool #iaskedherforahashtagandthatswhatcametohermind #todaywasherfinaldayofschoolforreal Q: What was the last book that took your breath away? Last night I finished this book. And it blew me away. Completely out of the water. I've never read anything like this. Ever. It was so incredibly thrilling and enchanting and heart wrenching and absolutely MAGICAL. The Sisters of the Winter Wood by @renarossner is a beautiful, haunting read based on Jewish folklore/mythology and inspired by the Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti. Written both in prose and verse, this book was a wild ride! I highly recommend this book. It has so much to offer. I still have stars in my eyes! This will be our second Sister Read and I think it will be very interesting as we tackle this very popular book. My oldest sister is already half way and she has ~~thoughts~~. Meanwhile my second eldest sister and I have yet to start bc we are finishing our current reads. I would love to know your thoughts on this book! #TheCruelPrince #HollyBlack #bookstagram #yabooks #books #reader #bookishcanadians #fantasy #youngadultbooks #faeriebooks #igbooks #bookstagramer #maytbr #mayreads #LittleBrownBooks

June Wrap Up & July TBR | Can time please stop flying so fast??? Thank you.

Greetings readers!

Here I am. I made it. This post was supposed to be up like three days ago, but I have only just gotten to it. I still working off the high from this long weekend. If any of you were wondering, my Canada Day weekend was fabulous and I loved every second of it!

On to actual business though…I am honestly at a lost here. June was supposed to be THE month. And it started out as THE month, but slowly it dwindled into some month. Here’s the thing…school has been a big issue these past couple of months so things have been real slow for me in academics and really great in the book world. Then….school decides to become a thing again…and basically it is one big mess. I am a big mess. And my reading/blogging suffered for it.

Sigh.

But if anything I did have a good month overall! I had some really great reads and got some even greater books. Plus I got to go to things!!! And I’m…well. I’m okay overall!

Let’s get into it shall we?

What Rendz Read

An Ember in the Ashes & A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

SAVE THE DATE by @morgamat is my current read and I'm really enjoying it! It is incredibly funny and also very heartfelt. Considering it is my first Morgan Matson book, I'd say things are going very, very good! I was lucky enough to meet Morgan on her trip to Toronto last week and got my copy of Save the Date signed! (It's double signed too because it's a first edition!!) I did an event recap on my blog, so if you want to read more about what Morgan discussed, follow the link in my bio!! Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf
Ughhhhh I just wasn’t feeling it…Full Review to Come.

That’s a total of eight books! Plus two more that I started…which I didn’t finish, but you’ll hear about those more in next months wrap-up. Could I have done better with the reading?…yeah. But I hit a major slump after Reaper and there is a good reason for it!

THE HAUL

Once again, my mail box was packed and I attended a few events where I was lucky to get books and I visited the book store a couple times too! So those are all my excuses for the big haul I’m about to unravel. *smiles*

I was feeling down…so clearly buying a book was the cure! I am so excited to get to it!

I did a little impulse shopping last week because I was feeling down, and what better way to cheer up than buying new books? I've heard a lot of wonderful things about SKY IN THE DEEP by @adrienneyoungbooks! Many people have told me they absolutely loved it, so I cannot wait to read all about its epicness myself! I am so, so behind on so, so many reads. It is absolutely unbelievable. What I’m trying to say is that this list is going to be quite long, and I probably won’t get to everything, but I’m going to try!!! *The usual speech I give every month*

LifeL1k3 by Jay Kristoff
Kiss of a Royal by  Lindsey Duga
When Life Gives You Demons by Jennifer Honeybourn
Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton
Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart
Game of Secrets by Kim Foster
Kingdom of Ash and Soot by C.S. Johnson
A Mark Unwilling by Candace Wondrak

Well…I don’t feel stressed at all. I’m probably forgetting a book somewhere in there. Did I mention how big a mess I am at the moment? But I’ll just go with the flow.

Alright people. That’s it for this wrap up post. I have been slumping in terms of good content blogging lately, but I am hoping to up the ante this month with some more pizzazz and some fun things that I have planned! I hope you all stick around to read!

Let me know what you think! What was your favourite read from June? What was your favourite new release? What books are you excited for this month? What content would you like to see more of on this site?

Happy reading!

April Wrap Up and May TBR

Greetings readers!

Life right now is in a lull for me. My university is literally trying to crush my will with anxiety. Even the promise of summer vacation does not cheer me. It’s just a big disaster right now, but I will not bore you with details.

The only silver lining I can really find in this mess right now is that I have had a lot more time to read and blog. I’m still never “ahead” of schedule, but I try. And I am making good progress! I actually made a blog calendar that looks all cutesy to keep me on track for this month, hopefully it does its job, so I can do my job.

Looking back at April, it was pretty good. I got in some good reads and even better buys!

This time around I’m going to add in a little update on my TV life too because PEOPLE. I have been watching some shows.

THE HAUL

TV/ MEDIA ENTERTAINMENT

I have watched TV and I have watched movies. Lately I have had enough time to do both! So let me tell you about all the great and wonderful things to watch.

On My Block

On My Block Poster
via IMDb

10000000000000000000/10 R E C O M M E N D

If you want to laugh, cry and get angry all in one sitting, you need to watch this show. If you hate laughing, crying and getting angry at the same time, you still NEED to watch this show. I HAVE BEEN BLOWN AWAY. It all started in a big Snap Chat group with my friends, they were raving about it and I was there like okay. Soon enough everyone in the chat watched it and I was the only one left. With some added pressure of everyone sending memes and I not getting the jokes, I went forth and watched the show.

I LOVE IT SO MUCH. AND I AM SO THANKFUL IT HAS BEEN RENEWED FOR A SEASON TWO BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE CRIED IF I WAS LEFT WITH THAT ENDING!

GO FORTH AND WATCH IT NOW. If you want a diverse, funny and a m a z i n g show to fill your hearts, WATCH ON MY BLOCK!!!

Then I watched Avengers: Infinity War

I was destroyed.

Then I watched it again.

And was left in anguish.

That ending. It happened. They did that.

I don’t need to tell you to watch it, just do it!

March Wrap Up & April TBR

Greetings readers!

Yet another month has come and gone. Why time, do you fly so fast? What happened to slow and steady? Dear Rendz can’t keep up. She is falling behind. SLOW DOWN, WILL YA!

Anyways, March was March. Ummmm…what can I say? It was a typical Rendz March, I got a ton of books and read like three. I am really struggling to keep up with my reading schedule, mostly because of some great shows I’ve been watching. Darn TV for being such an entertaining distraction!

Was it a spectacular month…? Not really, it was just a March.

February Wrap-Up & March TBR

Greetings readers!

I am not supposed to be writing this post write now. Rather, I should be digging into my school books and writing about far more boring topics. However, everyone needs a little leisure right? Yeah. A well-deserved break.

But Rendz you just came back from a 1 1/2 lunch, opened a word document, stared at it and then opened WordPress and all other social media accounts! Plus you have to write two very long essays, due ver—

A. Well. Deserved. Break. Yes.

I always forget that February is a short month and when March 1st rolls around I’m usually a puddle of confusion. How the time flies? Seriously, everyday seems to be going faster and faster and are not our days supposed to be getting longer??? Le sigh. Up here in Canada, we are in limbo. One day super-winter like, the next super spring-like. Make up your mind mother nature!! And just FYI I prefer the latter.

Anyways. February. A very Bookish February.

I got quite a few things read and I acquired quite a few books too! Let’s see how well this short month fared for moi!

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake (Started in February, finished in March)
What a stressful series. 4.5 / 5 stars. I need the next one, now!!!!
(Perhaps a mini-review to come!)

That’s five books! Considering it was a short month, I’d say 5 is a job well done!

What I Hauled

I got a little gutsy this month and sent out quite a few requests to publishers hoping for a positive response (Even though I was prepared for a kind no). But I got them! Yipee!
