The Series That Changed My Life | Pt 1

Greetings readers!

Let’s get nostalgic.

It’s a simple question many people ask: “What book changed your life?”

The complexity comes in answering. For me at least, and I am sure many of you would agree. No one book changed my life. No one book had everything I was looking for. No one book had a full representation of who I was, rather it was multiple books. Series of books. Multiple series of books that I learned from, harboured intense feelings toward and ultimately changed me.

So we are going to start from the beginning and move forward. I am counting the series that have impacted me in one way, shape or form. There isn’t really an end to this list. As life goes on, I keep reading more series change me and this list grows!

Those of you who know me might spot some familiars and go “Well…duh!” and some might surprise you. I doubt it though, I am about as open as a…well…book!

Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park

So some of you know that I hated reading growing up. Going to the library at school consisted of me picking up picture books, but in Grade Two we had to start taking out novels. Books without pictures. The horror. I couldn’t fathom reading a page of just words. Words that I didn’t know their meanings or how to pronounce them. No.

read beauty and the beast GIF
I used to be a Gaston…..*shame*

I saw all my classmates taking out books and reading them just fine. I (who was very prideful) took out books just like them and never actually read them! I hardly ever read my assigned books for language too. Eventually my teacher caught me. She noticed how I was struggling to pronounce words and when she interviewed me about my book, I knew nothing about it! She told me that I had to try and I was also afraid of being reprimanded for not reading again, so I listened to her.

sandra bullock girls GIF
My teacher was actually quite nicer when she told me to read.

The next time I went to the library I found a bucket full of thin-ish looking chapter books. An entire series, I realized about this coocky girl named Junie B. and her adventures in school. I made a pledge to myself in the moment, standing in front of the boxes that I would read this entire series no matter what. And I did. I read one every week or so and continued to do so until I found other series that drew me into my reading mode. I loved Junie B. It was the perfect series for me. A little comedy, a lot of drama and just good fun!

I’ll always be thankful for Junie B. Jones and Barbara Park as they mark the beginning of my reading journey.

Now we are going to skip forward a few years and meet twelve year-old Rendz! In other words, The Golden Age of Rendz.

Over the years I read lots of great books, I went to the library three or four times over the summer to take out books, but none of them really impacted me or made me addicted to reading. That comes later!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Day 7 of #bookishfools is Never judge a book by its movie Now I don't think that The Hunger Games movies were all that bad. In fact I really enjoyed watching them all in the cinemas. However, they pale in comparison to the elation and emotions that the books derived from me. I think The Hunger Games book was better than the movie. I think the Catching Fire book and movie really worked well together. As for Mocking Jay...I think that they were okay. But the whole splitting the last movie into two films was unnecessary in my opinion! What did you think of these movies? #thehungergames #catchingfire #mockingjay #suzannecollins #bookstomovies #ya #youngadultbooks #bookblog #bookaddict #bookstagram

It was a January, some years ago. I was at my cousins’ house after school as usual. My older cousin arrived and I saw that she was clutching a black book with a weird/cool-bird-thing on the cover. Tween-Rendz was intrigued, so I asked my cousin what she was reading. To quote her: “How do you not know?” Apparently these books were rather popular and her hold from the library finally came after weeks of waiting. Long story short, she ended up buying them to avoid the long library wait and I borrowed them from her in February.

I read the entire trilogy in nine days.

  baby book story reading GIF

I always said that reading books slowly made them more enjoyable, but for the first time I had experienced the joy of being completely engrossed in a story that you finish it before you even realize. Everything about THG just hit me in all the right places. The action, the romance (even though it was a triangle), and the heroine just completely transformed me. Literally. (I braided my hair like Katniss for the next three years…#TrueStory) Then the movies came out and were great and I was just completely submerged by this genre of dystopia and  fantasy.

jennifer lawrence cake GIF

The big thing about THG is that the series made me less hesitant to head into the teen section or to explore the YA section at Indigo. I visited the library more often, took out lots of more books and read them faster than ever. My YA journey really started with this book series and I have never looked back!

Last one of this post! It’s really no surprise!

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Controversial Bit: It didn’t begin with the books, it began with the movie.

shocked gasp GIF

C’est vrai! It was December 2005 and baby-Rendz demanded that she and her family watch the movie she has been seeing advertised on TV lately. Her mother said “Your going to get scared by all the monsters,” but Baby-Rendz insisted. So we bought the tickets and I watched The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for the first time!

My mom was right, I was supremely scared of the monsters.

narnia GIF

My cousin would eventually buy me a DVD of the movie and that, ladies and gents, is the beginning of a phase I am never going to grow out of!

BUT..the books? Where do they come into play? In the 6th grade my teacher decided to read LWW to us and I was literally over the moon because that meant we would also be watching the movie at the end of the unit! Of course while studying the book we had to find all the symbolism and metaphors and all those other fancy-dancy literary terms (plus I went to a Catholic school, and this is C.S. Lewis so you know Jesus was brought up a couple times too), but all of that really took a side note. For me, I was realizing that my favourite fantasy world could be explored in more ways, that I could venture further into the world with the other books, I just had to find the motivation to do it.

narnia GIF

That motivation didn’t come until the following year when I bought a beautiful bind up of all seven books and read the entire, humongous tome in a month and a half. It was fantastic, I found new love for LWW and also found other faves in The Horse and His Boy and The Silver Chair!

Narnia was such an important feature in my life. It took up (and still does) most of my thoughts, I would coerce my friends into playing “Narnia” at recess, I would reenact my favourite scenes at home and find my favourite quotes to write out. The obsession is never ending. I know they may not be the most politically correct books and C.S. Lewis is pretty problematic himself, but I cannot deny what a huge impact these works had and still have on me.

Narnia was my first fantasy world that I visited and even though I’m sure there are other amazing worlds to explore, I will always choose Narnia as my go to.

Alright that’s enough for now! These are just the beginning books, the ones that really impacted me as a kid and tween. There are still a few more series that changed me in some way that I will dive into in other posts.

Let me know what you think! As a kid what are some books that really changed you? Or perhaps they made you fall in love with reading? I would love to know!

Happy reading!

The Get to Know Me Tag

Greetings readers!

Ages ago, I was tagged by the lovely Angelica @ The Book Cover Girls to do this tag! Angelica has a really awesome blog (reviews in English and Spanish What???? I know!!! Soo cooool) I think you should all go over and visit, just click the link! Thank you, Angelica!

Alright people, I figured it is a good time to do this tag since my birthday was just under two weeks ago! So why not get to know me a little more, now that I am a year older!

 me point daniel henney GIF
via giphy.com

All About Me:

Name: Not Rendz (It’s a pseudonym I creating for the sole purpose of this blog)

Nicknames: Ummm….Rendz (sometimes spelled Rends) XD

Birthday: Earlier in July! I spent it doing nothing, but collected some more funds for books!!

Star Sign: Cancer

Occupation: Right now, I’m a summer-bum. Oh and I blog. Read. Get artsy at times!

Appearance:

Hair Colour: Dark Brown, with a red patch. (It’s literally a patch near my temple and it’s natural!)

Hair length: Half-way down my back (It’s curly-curly so it’s probably longer!)

Eye Colour: Dark brown. Not the intense blue from my grandfather *curses*

Best Feature: Oh geez. The first feature that popped up into my head is not one I want to share over the internet. SO let’s go with skin. I was lucky enough to go through my teens with very few blemishes.

Braces: Never had them. I was lucky enough to have straight enough teeth! They aren’t perfect, but good enough for me. Though I did sleep with a night-guard for a while.

Piercings: Just my ears. And they are not even. My grandmother did them for me when I was a baby, with…ummm…very traditional methods.

Tattoos: No. (My parents would kill me.) But I do want one. I often think about what I would get, but I don’t think I will actually ever do it! 1. Needles freak me out and 2. I’m far to indecisive to come up with a concrete design that will be on my body forever!

Right or Left: Right handed! I suck at writing with my left! I have tried to train myself many, many times.

Firsts:

Holiday: I’ve never been on a real-real holiday. I’ve only ever gone back home to visit family in El Salvador, which is always fun and my aunts and uncles always take me to cool places. But I have never been a true tourist. I want to be a true tourist!

Best Friend: My first BFF was way back in the first grade. I feel really bad because I don’t remember too much about our time together, but I know we did everything together! She left our school the next year so I moved on to another friend and from then on we added a third person to our trinity. We were inseparable. I really miss those days!

Award: Growing up with two older sisters who had such great achievements in school, put on the pressure. I worked my absolute hardest in school and all the work paid off. I won leadership awards, many academic excellence awards, but my very first award was a Future Ace award for Co-operation. Baby Rendz was really proud of herself!

Sport: You grow up in a Hispanic family, you play soccer. You grow up in a school that holds regular floor hockey tournaments, you play floor hockey. I did both. And loved both! I haven’t played either in years –yeeeaaarrrssss — so if I play now, I would suck more than I did way back when! I did play ice hockey one year for my school. We were the first ever team and boy did we suck. I SUCKED. We scored one goal for the whole season! It was a rough season to say the least! XD

Concert: I would say that it was the Toronto Symphony Orchestra but that wouldn’t be exactly true because it’s not what I would consider a “concert”. However, I will be headed to a REAL concert later this summer! My sisters and I are going to see Daddy Yankee!! *screams*

music video despacito luis fonsi daddy yankee GIF
via giphy.com

Favourites:

TV Shows: Once Upon A Time, Alone, America Ninja Warrior, Face-Off, a lot of “reality” TV (it is an addiction…) and yeah I don’t watch too much TV otherwise.

Colour: I have never had one favourite colour! It depends on my mood, but I usually tell people purple. Or rather Maroon.

Song: Again, I don’t think I have an absolute favourite  but Kelly Clarkson’s “Break Away” will always touch my soul deeply. Also “A Moment Like This”. Kills. Me. Every. Time.

Books: What a long list! Okay…let’s begin! The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lunar Chronicles, The Penderwicks, The Winner’s Trilogy, An Ember in the Ashes, Six of Crows, The Falling Kingdoms and the list goes on!

Shoes: Snuggley slippers. They are the only things I can (sort of) walk in!

 kelly clarkson GIF

Currently:

Feeling: Slightly overwhelmed and tired. Thinking about the future does that.

Single or Taken: Real life Rendz is single, but Rendz-Rendz has quite a long list of lovers, boyfriends and husbands.*

*They may or may not be fictional.

Eating: Just had lunch. Pollo guïsado. Yum

Thinking about: The future as mentioned. Sometimes school is a stress-maker, even on vacation.

Watching: Nothing. Maybe I’ll watch a Disney movie later, to cheer myself up!

Wearing: Pyjamas!! (And it is the middle of the afternoon here!)

memories bananas old times pyjamas GIF
via giphy.com

Future:

(Oh look here we go again!)

Want Children: Yeah, but like not now or anytime soon. (Now if we are talking fictional children, I am a mother of many.)

Want to be married: Yeah! I mean I kind of want the “first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage” thing. But again: if we are talking fictionally, I am a wife of many!!!

Careers in mind: I really want to avoid this subject on every level. I am studying to teach languages, is it exactly what I want?I don’t know since I don’t know what I want in life. *If I ever write my books though, I’ll let you know XD*

Where you want to live: Geez, I want to go everywhere! I want to see every place! *Hence the “I wanna be a true tourist!”* But I’ll probably stay in Canada and settle myself in this city or another one, I don’t know!

 tangled rapunzel flynn GIF
via giphy.com

Do You Believe In:

God: Yup. I gotta keep the Big Man up to date with real life Rendz’s going-ons.

Miracles: To quote a song from the Prince of Egypt (aka the movie that Rendz is constantly quoting and singing) “There can be miraclessssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!! When you believeeeeeeeeee”

Ghosts: Yes/no. I’m not a true believer, but if put in a dark strange place I will scare myself into thinking there are ghosts!

Aliens: There’s gotta be something else out there guys. We can’t be the only ones!

Soul mates: Yes/no. I don’t know. I would like to think that there is one true person out there for me, but I get scared thinking about it too! Like, what if I accidentally end up picking the wrong person. It’s just scary to think about for me!

Heaven: That’s the goal.

Hell: Really want to avoid this place.

Kissing on the first date: No. Not enough “get to know you” time has passed. Even if the date went super awesome, it’s a no to the smooch for me.

  • Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you.
  • Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.

Two bloggers both, each with 11 amazing questions so I’ll keep my answers short!

Liza’s Questions

1. What fictional character would you choose to spend the day with in their world?

16123357_142463446253664_1327405010568347648_n

Lucy in Narnia. Hello! Dream come true. I would stay there forever!

2. Pick one book that you would choose to completely forget? Whether it be to read it again for the first time or because you disliked it.

I would love to forget An Ember in the Ashes and A Torch Against the Night because I love those books and I want to get my socks knocked off again!

3. What food would you like to try from a fictional world? e.g. Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans

I want to share a piece of the cake the Rampion crew had before Cinder’s coronation! I believe it was lemon flavoured!

4. What colour book spines do you have the most of?

Black.

5. What is your favourite book cover out of the books you own? Make sure you say which edition it is or add a photo as most books have multiple covers

Tough Question…

Anne of Green Gables (Puffin in Bloom Edition)

It is so adorable and I think it captures the quirky, funny character that is Anne!

FullSizeRender (9)

6. What’s one item/device you wish you could own from any fictional world?

Cinder’s brain computer thingy. It would make my life sooooo much easier! (And cooler)

7. Pretty sure I’ve used this question before, but what power/ability do you wish you could have?

Elemental. Controlling all the elements would be awesome!!

8. What is your favourite genre to read, even if you don’t read it the most?

Fantasy. Fantasy. Fantasy.
I love it so much that I barely read outside of it! I need to expand my genres!

9. Do you listen to audiobooks? Or want to?

No. I tried it one time and it was just not for me!

10. Where is your favourite place to read?

On a couch with a comfy blanket and pillows for me to snuggle with!

11. Are your book shelves full or have you still got room for more?

The shelf in my room is full and at risk of collapsing. The ones in my study downstairs still have some room left! So obviously I can keep buying books regularly. Got to use up that space right?

Kate’s Questions

1 What is your favourite colour combinations? Least favourite?

Green and violet make magic together!

Orange and blue….just does not work for me.

2 Do you have a “to be watched” list? If so, what movie/TV show/anime has been on it the longest?

I do. As of today, Gilmore Girls has been on there for a while. I started it, but I never finished it and my sisters say I will never finish it but I want to prove them wrong. Still…I won’t be finishing it for a while!

3 Do you prefer coffee or tea, or both?

Neither! Though I prefer coffee over tea! Hot Chocolate is the only hot drink I’ll take!

4 What is your favourite genre? Your least favourite?

Favourite is fantasy! Least favourite is paranormal/supernatural…though I have some guilty pleasure reads under those genres!

5 What book/movie/TV show/anime/Webtoon had a 180 twist? Did you like it?

Raging Star (Dust Lands #3)  by Moira Young
The twist had my head aching for days! Did I like it?…yes. Did it go well for the characters?…..When do plot twists ever go well for the characters?

6 Do you have favorite characters who happen to be villains/antagonists?

The Darkling. Come to me my love, *bats eyes*

7 Do you prefer humorous quotes, or inspirational quotes? Can you give an example?

I love funny quotes, but inspirational quotes are words to live by!

“Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything’s possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take it all one day at a time.”

~ Marie Lu, Legend

8 Are there any hyped books/movies/TV shows/anime/Webtoons that lived up to the hype?

The Hunger Games, Caraval, Six of Crows, An Ember in the Ashes (but this needs more hype), THE LUNAR CHRONICLES!!!!

9 What is an underrated book/movie/TV show/anime/Webtoon that everyone deserves to know about?

The Penderwicks  by Jeanne Birdsall is a middle grade series, but I promise you it will squish your hearts and you will feel all happy and summer-y!

The Stoker & Holmes series by Colleen Gleason is really good. It involves a steam-punk Victorian era and mystery! And maybe some vampires….maybe.

pen

10 Have you binged any books/TV shows/anime/Webtoons recently?

I binged The Winner’s Trilogy last summer (best decision ever) and I have plans to binge the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas this summer alongside my Lunar Chronicles re-read!

11 (Shameless advertising time!) Please check my post My Latest Binge Worthy Comics. Do any of these look interesting to you?

Ummm yes….these look amazing! Rise from Ashes and My Dear Cold-Blooded King look epic, I must find a way to get my hands on them!

Tag Time?:

I am very lazy at the moment and I also do not feel like coming up with 11 questions so I won’t be tagging anyone at this time!
I’m sorry my loves, in my next award post I will definitely tag some of you!
I promise!

Alright I am finished! Thank you again Liza and Kate for tagging me I really appreciate the both of you. And don’t forget readers to follow their blogs for more bookish posts!

Happy reading!

If you did tag me and for some reason I didn’t get the pingback or I missed your name…I’m so sorry! I still really appreciate you…whoever you are! 🙃🙃

HUGE THANKS GO OUT TO ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BLOGGERS AND BEST BLOGGER FRIENDS (BBF) Mandy @ Book Princess Reviews. Mandy has such an amazing blog, with amazing reviews, funny tags and other bookishly fantastic posts you should all go explore! ALSO A HUGE THANKS TO Bella @ Bella Blogs Because Books! Bella also has such an amazing blog, I love her reviews and you must all go check her out!!

7 THINGS ABOUT RENDZ…

1.) I started this blog in August of 2016 and honestly did not think I would make it past September. I tend to start things that I know I will not finish BUT working with books. Reading them. Writing about them. TALKING about them with other people is the best thing that I have ever done. I love it, so why stop?

2.) None of my close friends or family know about this blog. I have only told my two older sisters and one friend (who never asked me about it afterwards…so I guess she was not that interested). I don’t really think it would interest them if I talked about it! Plus…my parents would freak about my safety over the internet! Which I do sometimes because this world is honestly crazy.

3.) I don’t book shop online too much because I try to keep my book purchases to a minimum in the eyes of my parents. Having the book arrive at my door or my parents catching the bill would equal ☠☠☠ Meaning, I miss out on a lot of good deals and pre-order stuff never happens here! *cries*

4.) You should all know by now that I am terrible at keeping up with my TBR. I set the bar so high and I miss it every month! It gets so frustrating, but I’m getting better in at squeezing in some more time! (In other words I’m losing sleep!)

5.) My bookshelf has no real system of organization and it bothers me, but I’m too lazy to change it. I have my Marissa Meyer/Narnia shelf at the top and the rest of it is just a mess!

6.) I watch a lot of BookTube! My favourite is Regan from PeruseProject! We are literally best friends…she just does not know it. *not to sound creepy* I mean we like all the same books and I get all my recommendations from her! 🙃

7.) I am dedicating July as my re-read month! More news to come about this event in the coming weeks or so…😉

I Tag…

I feel like everyone has already been nominated for this! I mean you are all such amazing and lovely bloggers! I tag you all! Please do it on my behalf if you have not been nominated yet! Consider yourself a nominee as of now, by me!

Hope you enjoyed these 7 odd facts about me…that are not all that interesting but fun to share!

Mandy’s Questions

1.) What was the last song that made you want to dance? And did you actually dance or is dancing a D: face thing?

Chantaje – Shakira ft Maluma & Rabiosa – Shakira (An old song, I know…but I’ve been listening to it again)

😳 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳

I am no dancer. I cannot dance like Shakira. My hips don’t lie when they say they cannot move. I try to dance, but I guess I do a lot more face dancing!

A lot of this…

None of this…

2.) Do you believe in one true love (the Disney Princesses would be so proud of you if you did)?

I like to think so. I like to think that there is one person out there I am destined to be with for the rest of my life. It is kind of scary to think about it. I mean one person out of billions? Will I find them? Will I know? Will I accidentally think someone else is the one..when they are actually not?

But I guess that’s the point of the one true love. You will find them and you will just know!

3.) What is your go-to snack food? And do you ever eat it while you’re reading?

CHIPS!

I cannot eat chips while I read. I am a messy eater and I KNOW I will get crumbs between the pages or oil stains on them!

Nadwa’s Questions

1.) What’s a book or a series you’d want everyone to read?

This is a list! But I’ll go with my current recommendation that I throw at everybody.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. The perfect sci-fi adventure with a classic fairy tale twist! Or vice versa!

tlc

2.)Do you have a reading-related pet peeve?

Doggy-eared pages hurt my soul! Also, changing covers mid-series. I recently jut got the hardcover of Rebel of the Sands…but the US/Canada covers changed for the rest of the series…so I’ll have mismatching books which again, hurts my soul.

24934065 Traitor to the Throne (Rebel of the Sands, #2)

*via Goodreads*

3.) What’s a popular book you hate?

*Dramatic pause. Deep breathe. Sinister smile*

QUEEN OF SHADOWS by Sarah J. Maas

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)
via Goodreads
*Ugh..gross*

Honestly, I really liked the first three books in this series. I really enjoyed Celaena’s character. She was sassy, strong and within her depths had a sense of morality and humility. Then this book rolled around and just..blah! Everyone took a 360 and Maas threw out everything I cherished about this series through the window. And for those of you who think I am just upset that Chaolaena is not a thing anymore…please, that is just one reason. There is also, the cringe-worthy Rowan character, who should have been her close friend not mate. Then there is Aelin’s new self-righteousness (yup…humility is gone), there is also the fact that every single character has to lhave romantic feelings towards her. BLAH. The fact that Rowaelin took up 50% of this book. Also, the fact that Chaol is painted as a bad guy for speaking his mind and not having any supernatural powers. The only reason I continue this series is for the side characters. I love Manon and cannot wait to see where she takes me. I love Chaol and Dorian and I want to see them reunited as brothers.

End of rant. Don’t hate me. Just remember how much Rowaelin I have to deal with in Empire of Storms 😷 😷 😷 😷 😷 😷

My Questions

  1. What was the last book you bought? Have you read it yet?
  2. Do you wait until the entire series is out to read it or do you just read them as they come?
  3. Do you own a well-loved book? (One with a lot of damage to it?)

Thank you once again for nominating me Nadwa and Mandy! I really appreciate it and I hope my nominees enjoy answering my questions!

In middle school, I promised myself that I would read the entire series! I read every single one of the books in my school library, but not every one in the series because not all were available to me. Still I am very proud of that accomplishment. It helped start my reading journey!

MOST DIFFICULTY READING

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli

Boring as hell. It used twenty billion examples to explain one sentence. All those twenty billion examples were of people I do not know of. The most agonizing 73 pages to I have ever read!

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Caraval (Caraval, #1)

The biggest read of this year…and I have not read it yet. I have been avoiding reviews and posts about this book because I really want to go in blind. Like with no opinions on me whatsoever. I know there is a lot of excited and good hype around this, but I want to read it alone. AND DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO AVOID THIS BOOK, IT IS LITERALLY EVERYWHERE! Anyways, I plan on reading it soon because there is only so much time I can wait before spoilers arise!

My Signed Books Collection!

Greetings readers!

I am finally on my March break (Spring break) and it feels glorious to know that I will be away from that wretched school of mine! Joking…it’s not wretched…well only slightly! So, one day I had a mini conversation that inspired this post with a special blogger friend, Mandy @ Book Princess Reviews . You should all go check her out because she has an amazing blog, with amazing reviews and is just generally awesome! (<3 you Mandy!)

Now since this post idea was inspired by Mandy, I felt it necessary to create it and make her feel jealous! Mwahaha! Just kidding! I won’t make you too jealous…maybe. Today I shall be sharing with you all the books I have signed in my collection. I have acquired these books over the past year, from June of 2016 to today. I hold all signed books close to my heart because the author took the time to dedicate their book to me and sometimes I see them physically touch and sign my book, so I fangirl like crazy! *That does not sound creepy whatsoever!*

Let’s start with the first signing I ever went to!

It wasn’t really a signing but more of an event for Romance writers that the public could attend…if they payed the ticket fee. I knew Morgan Rhodes was going to be there, so I had to go and dragged my sister along. It was the first time I ever met Morgan Rhodes (or an author for that matter) and even though I only talked to her for a few minutes it was one of the best moments ever! *I was internally fangirling and blushing like crazy…I was that nervous*

  1. Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes
  2. A Book of Spirits and Thieves by Morgan Rhodes

In June, I went to another signing featuring Morgan Rhodes, E.K. Johnston and Teresa Toten. I only had books for Morgan to sign that day, but it was so wonderful seeing and listening to the other authors as well.

  1.  Rebel Spring  by Morgan Rodes
  2. Gathering Darkness by Morgan Rhodes

In August, I was lucky enough to attend the Indigo Teen Fall Preview Event hosted  by my local bookstore Chapters Indigo. Surprisingly, E.K. Johnston joined our meeting and I was able to get an ARC of Spindle signed! (It is the companion to A Thousand Nights…you should definitely read it!)

  1. Spindle (ARC) by E.K. Johnston

In September, I went to the HCCFrenzy author signing featuring Lauren Oliver and Kendare Blake! You can read more about that signing in my Teen Tour Experience post! I actually had Three Dark Crowns made out to my sisters and I because we are going to buddy read it! Also, Lauren Oliver signed REPLICA twice! One signature and message on each side! So Cool!!!

  1. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare  Blake
  2. Replica (LYRA) by Lauren Oliver
  3. Replica (GEMMA) by Lauren Oliver

In October, I had the amazing opportunity to go to another signing event! Penguin Teen brought their teen tour to Brampton and so I had the chance to meet Morgan Rhodes (again 🙂 ), Catherine Egan, Kiersten White and Marie Lu! I was so incredibly happy that day, you can read more about that event in my The Lady is a Champ – Experience post!

I honestly get so giddy when I look at these books!

  1. Legend, Prodigy & Champion by Marie Lu
  2. The Young Elites, The Rose Society & The Midnight Star by Marie Lu
  3. Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White

In December, I got lucky and won a giveaway for an ARC of Blood Rose Rebellion by Rosalyn Eves! I didn’t think it would come signed but I am so happy it did! You can read my review here!

  1. Blood Rose Rebellion  by Rosalyn Eves

In January, I got lucky again and won a signed hardcover of Poison’s Kiss by Breeana Shields. Please take a moment to admire this beautiful signature!

  1. Poison’s Kiss by Breeana Shields

Finally, in February I got lucky AGAIN! I won a signed hardcover of Frostblood by Elly Blake! (Another Canadian author YAY). I also attended the Veronica Roth signing for her Carve the Mark Tour and got the book for FREE and SIGNED! You can read more about that hilarious night in my Veronica Roth Event Experience.

  1. Frostblood by Elly Blake
  2. Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth

That is it for my signed books! I have a total of 18! It feels so cool when I say that. Of course, I could have had 20 if I had gone to the Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir signings the year before, BUT NO I DIDN’T AND IT IS THE BIGGEST, LARGEST, MOST MASSIVE REGRET I HAVE! *cries*

Anyways, I will be getting more signed books in the near future! I will be meeting Sarah J. Maas when she comes to my town in May for her A Court of Wings and Ruin tour. It’s time for me to jump on that bandwagon. I will be getting Crown of Midnight signed with some other books and I, of course will obsess over Chaol and his novel! Look forward for that event recap!

I hope you guys enjoyed this post and are feeling envious. Just kidding! Tell me about your signed books and author meetings below so I can get super jealous! Seriously, if any of you mention meeting Sabaa and Leigh I will get CRAZY jealous!

Happy reading!

Rules

1. Thank the person who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.

2. Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you.

3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write then 11 new questions.

4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

Thank you again Kester for nominating me and I hope you all enjoy my answers!

1. What is one book that made you cry?

The Penderwicks (1-4) by Jeanne Birdsall

All of these books made me cry for some reason. They are middle-grade but have some truly heart-breaking scenes. The books deal a lot with the themes of loss, death and renewal in the eyes of children so they make me teary sometimes.

2. If you could travel one place in the entire world and all your expenses were paid, where would you go?

Can I cheat and say Europe? It’s been a dream of mine to travel all of Europe and see the historical landmarks and take in the sites. France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Sweden, England… everywhere, I want to see it all! Perhaps some day!

3. Where is your favourite place to read? Like in front of fireplace, outside on the grass, on your bed in a blanket… what?

On the couch in my sitting room, with the sunlight pouring through the open curtains and some comfy pillows. If it is winter a nice blanket covering me, if it is summer the window must be open! It’s the perfect setting to keep me concentrated on my reading!

4. Which TV show would you choose to binge watch?

I tried to binge watch Gilmore Girls but got side tracked. I really want to watch Jane the Virgin and I need to catch up on Once Upon a Time!

5. Would you rather meet your favourite author but you cannot say a single word, or would you have a signed copy of your favourite book made personally to you but every 10th page is missing?

Meet my favourite author and not say a word. WHY?

A. I would  be in their presence.

B. I would get to see them physically sign my book.

C. I would save myself the embarrassment of saying something dumb (as I have before)

I would not be able to deal with missing pages!

6. What is your top reading strategy to maximize how many books you will read in a year?

Monthly goals, at least two books each month. On Fridays, Saturdays and Holidays I stay up really late. Like very, very late. In the summer I have a goal of 20 books in two months.

7. What is the talent or achievement that you are most proud of?

I can draw. I know some technique and craft. I’m no Picasso or DaVinci but I can make something look realistic or not…depending on the project.

8. What is your favourite movie adaptation of a book, and why?

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

This movie made me fall in love with Narnia. It made me want to go on adventures and be a queen. Be fearless. Be hopeful. Be magical. Just imagine a 6 year-old Rendz, sitting in a theatre with wide eyes taking in all the beauty and wonder that is Narnia. Hoping and dreaming that one day she would find her magical calling and be whisked off on adventures. Rendz is still waiting for that day, but her hope has not been deterred. Not to mention that the soundtrack is A M A Z I N G and it is literally the theme song of my life.

9. If you were going to recommend me one book, which one would it be, and why?

Cinder by Marissa Meyer…followed by the rest of the Lunar Chronicles. It has classic tales mixed with scifi, suspense, action and great twists. You will devour it!

tlc

10. Which fictional character would you go out on a date with, and do you think it would work out?

THE LIST. THIS IS A LIST. A HUGE LIST!

Ok..ok…I’ll do one for now. Just know that there is a long list.

Elias Veturius, you and me, dinner, pick me up at seven. Elias is so sweet and caring, I would love to go out with him. I think he would funny and charming and his eyes…oh his eyes! I wouldn’t be able to stop staring at them.

I would like to think that all my fictional dates would turn out successful, thank you very much.

11. What kind of book swag (e.g. buttons, bookmarks, postcards, bookplates, wristbands, etc.) is your favourite?

I like post cards! I love that they come with beautiful illustrations and detail. I actually won An Ember in the Ashes postcards in the newsletter giveaway by Sabaa Tahir and they are absolutely gorgeous!

  1. Crooked Kingdom Review
  2. Wires & Nerve Review
  3. Blood Rose Rebellion ARC Review

Royal Reader’s Questions

1.) What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done?

I’m not a spontaneous kind of person, I tend to overthink everything I do and each decision I make. It’s not the best quality to have and I tend to bury myself in doubt, but there was this one time I sent in a piece of writing to an author because she was doing a special program with my local library. I never share my creative writing with anyone but her response to my story made me happy and pushed me to keep going. Although now when I read what I sent her I realize it needs major fixing!

2.) If you could suddenly be an expert in any field at all, what would it be and why?

An astronaut. I would definitely be interested in going to space and seeing the world from the outside. I think their work is so cool and I would love to be in their shoes for a day!

via giphy.com

3.) Where is your favourite place to write your blog posts?

In my study. It’s where I do all my work and projects. I have a big desk with a comfy chair. Not to mention three shelves with some of my books (not all shelves have my books most of them a textbooks) It’s a small room but it’s my room and I can focus in here. (Most days anyways)

4.) If you could spend the day with your biggest inspiration, who would it be and what would you do? (Can be anyone at all, famous or not, living or passed on).

I have no idea. I don’t know if I have discovered my biggest inspiration apart from my family. They mean the world to meet but I get to spend everyday with them. There are so many people who do incredible things but I cannot think of one who has touched me personally! I guess I haven’t found anyone yet…perhaps in the near future.

5.) Weird: If you were to run away and join the circus (non-animal using circus only), would you either be a trapeze artist, a fire-eater, a tight-rope walker or a unicyclist?

Tight-rope walker. I would get to channel my inner Inej Ghafa.

tightrope

Melting Pots and Other Calamities Questions

1.) Have you ever checked out a hyped book/movie/TV show/other type of fiction, and did you enjoy it?

Many. Many! A lot of the books I read are the hyped ones and often times I enjoy them. For example The Hunger Games, Six of Crows, An Ember in the Ashes, The Lunar Chronicles, etc but there have been some I did not enjoy as much i.e. Queen of Shadows and Glass Sword.

2.) What is your favourite fandom? I don’t mean the show or book itself, but the group of people involved.

I love being a Lunartic! I’m not active in many groups but I do follow some blogs and Pinterest boards that always have great TLC memes and fan art. The fan art is amazing! It’s a community with no ship wars, great characters and a story that is always fun to revisit!

3.) Give two of your favourite quotes, one funny, and the other inspirational.

Funny:  20 Eternal Struggles Of Growing Up With Strict Parents <a class="pintag searchlink" data-query="%23strict" data-type="hashtag" href="/search/?q=%23strict&rs=hashtag" rel="nofollow" title="#strict search Pinterest">#strict</a> <a class="pintag" href="/explore/parents/" title="#parents explore Pinterest">#parents</a> <a class="pintag searchlink" data-query="%23struggle" data-type="hashtag" href="/search/?q=%23struggle&rs=hashtag" rel="nofollow" title="#struggle search Pinterest">#struggle</a>

Inspirational: “You are never to old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

4.) While writing your posts, do you have writer’s block, and if so, what kind is it? Like, do you have trouble coming up with ideas, or do you lack motivation?

My posts usually consist of reviews and tags/awards, I have yet to write a discussion or appreciation post. Sometimes I have trouble in my reviews coming up with the subheadings in my likes and dislikes. I struggle with finding the right things to say to express my true feelings for the book. Sometimes I think I sound really childish and I get stuck on my wording. To help I usually flip through the book to any random page and just think about the scenes before and after. That usually helps bring up ideas.

5.) (Funny question). Name something you loved as a kid. Do you still like it on occasion?

I used to watch Cinderella religiously and play “Cinderella” in my room wearing one of my mom’s dresses and pair of shoes. I had the movie practically memorized so I would reenact my favourite scenes or make up new story lines. After The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe came out in theatres I watched that religiously and made my friends play “Narnia” with me at recess. I think they got annoyed at some point of me always suggesting the same game over and over. Today, I don’t watch Cinderella as much anymore. She still holds a special place in my heart and whenever the movie is miraculously on TV I will watch it. As for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe I watch at least every two or three months. Whenever I am on holiday I pick a night to watch LWW and Prince Caspian. I don’t play dress up anymore or cosplay but I do try to make some fan art. Maybe one day I’ll share some with you!

My nominees:

If you have already been nominated you do not have to do it again!

My Questions:

  1. What is one of your most cherished bookish memories?
  2. Which character would you like to be best friends with?
  3. Do you have a specific reading schedule? (A set time in a day, a certain place, or a list of upcoming books)
  4. What super power would you love to have?
  5. Would you name a child/pet after fictional characters? (Funny)

This was a long post! If you stuck around and read all of it, it means a lot to me! Thank you once again to my nominators and I hope you guys know how much I appreciate these awards!

Happy reading,

~Rendz
