June Wrap-Up & July TBR | I still don’t have my copy of Mexican Gothic…

Greetings readers!

I hope you find yourselves doing well. June was quite a month and we are now half way through the year. I hope you’re taking some time to rest, but also keep up with the movements across the globe.

As you have read in the title, I am still waiting for my copy of Mexican Gothic to arrive, which is very disappointing. I thought pre-ordering would get me my book on time but alas here we are. In the mean time, I’ll happily enjoy some of the other books awaiting to be read by me!

Lowliest Book(s): The Court of Miracles and Salty, Bitter, Sweet really lacked for me.

Other Going Ons

I only have one summer course and it is really out to get me

I had so many things planned to do while I was home and since I was only taking one course I thought that I could keep up with my art projects and reading schedules but no. Of course not. Here I am struggling to learn and have fun at the same time. While I can’t say the course is very stressful, it is heavy and I resent having to take it. But it is what it is and I hope I at least learn something!

Penguin Teen Virtual Events

Penguin Teen Canada has hosted some pretty cool virtual  events this month and I was so grateful to be a part of them! My partner and I even won the Trivia Night they had one day and I was so excited! So many great authors joined in, including Marie Lu!!!! It was just a great way to spend Friday nights talking about books!

April Wrap-Up & May TBR | Did I read more? Did I read less? I don’t really know

Greetings readers!

I hope you are all doing well. I know how tough it can be for a lot of people and I hope you are all taking care of yourselves out there.

April was an interesting month for me. I finished my winter semester at uni and have been on a real vacation for the past two weeks. That being said, my summer semester starts in a week so I have to be prepared to start working again.

In terms of my reading, I was pretty chill. I have been doing a lot of rereads instead of reading my ARCs which is a little naughty of me in terms of being a good blogger, but I am working on it!

Enough with the excuses, let’s get into it!

NARNIA MARATHON

Just before my final assignment was due to be handed in for the semester a local TV Network blessed my life by hosting a Narnia marathon. Lucky for me, my assignment was already done so I peacefully enjoyed my movies. I sat in front of the TV for 6 hours straight, much to the chagrin of my family, especially my father who couldn’t watch TV. Are the movies still excellent? Yes. Do I still have the whole first movie memorised? Also, yes.

February Wrap-Up & March TBR | One month of bliss followed by one of…a lot less bliss.

Greetings readers!

I would just like to point out that everyone is out there living their best lives reading the new SJM book and here I am, not reading it, AND LIVING MY ABSOLUTE BEST LIFE.

Thank you more entertaining my one moment of pettiness. I just really needed to let that loose. Phew. Thanks.

Okay so…February was a MONTH, but also a pretty amazing one for reading if I do say so myself! I had two books enter my all time favourites list this month and that is MIRACULOUS! Truly an iconic month! That one extra day really made a difference.

March on the other hand is going to be HELL ON EARTH! I can feel it in my soul and see it on the calendar full of due dates and exam dates. If you’re into prayer, please pray for me. If you’re into spell casting, cast a spell for me (a good one). If you’re into vibez, please send me all the good vibez!

THE TWO BOOKS THAT TOTALLY ROCKED MY WORLD

The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso

The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu

Two titles that are so different, but totally changed my life. I have not felt the ease of giving a perfect five starts in a long time. I’ve had five star reads, but still in the back of my mind were reservations about them. Not these two. These were instant 5 star reads for me. I am so overwhelmed by emotion when I think about them. And when I say they are totally different, they ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

One is an adult high fantasy with lots of murder and backstabbing and general mind-fuckery (excuse my language) and the other is a YA historical fantasy that is an emotional roller coaster that made me sob.

I AM IN LOVE WITH BOTH OF THEM!

WE ARE GETTING CLOSER TO THE SHADOW & BONE TV SERIES!

Filming has wrapped and y’all the video they put out. The one with all the cast! The one with my cheeky son, Ben Barnes. I died. I died. I died. BUT I AM LIVING because I cannot wait for more news! Especially since there is a trailer that allegedly exists!

LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE EXCITING HAPPENED.

It was just another month for the books. I mean I would talk about stuff that happened in March, but then what would I have to write about next month!

November Wrap-Up & What’s Left of December TBR | OMG THIS BLOG IS STILL A THING!

Greetings readers!

disney GIF
giphy.com

Welcome one, welcome all! I am back!!! I just finished an intense exam season that had me neglecting this website for at least three weeks and it feels so amazingly wonderful to be back! I missed you all so much, I know I have so much catching up to do and SO much to read, but I am so so ready for it all!

I feel like I wrote maybe one or two posts between my last wrap-up and this one. *checks to see*

The actual number is 3.

OH WELL! Here’s another wrap-up posts that is being posted half-way through the month! These are always my more popular ones and the ones I have the most fun writing so here we go!

wrap-up-3

What Rendz Read!

I got a few books in in November before I started to get crushed by school and had to take a step back and reassess my entire life, so this will not be a long list.

Interestingly enough, for some mind-boggling reason that I still cannot quite comprehend I was in the mood to read Adult contemporary romance these past two months! What? EXACTLY. I, Rendz, reading a pure romance novel is so so rare and the fact that I was actually wanting to read these kinds of books is nothing short of a miracle! I have to say though I have been having some really good, some meh and some terrible encounters with my romance adventures, but all that will be coming in another post so stay tuned!

November:

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
The Collected Works of Gretchen Oyster by Cary Fagan
Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

December:

One and Only by Jenny Holiday
The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting
The Matchmaker’s List by Sonya Lalli
Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren

So I didn’t have bad reading months…I just didn’t read any of the books I was supposed to LOL!

The OVER-Haul

Ummmmm. So I found out that when I get stressed and anxious and overwhelmed in general…I tend to maybe buy/request all the books. These past months have been tough on me, my mental state has been so worried about school (this semester really came to slap me) so I may have sent one too many emails out and my publishers have been more than generous with me.

And yet…I’ll take this challenge.

It might take many more months of convincing for her to pick up the next book, but I have lots of hope she’ll continue to love the books!

Last Month I did An Unhaul!!!

I finally stopped being a hoarder and did some de-cluttering of old ARCs! I gave some to my old middle-school teacher and others went off to charity! It felt good letting them go although by now I’ve requested enough to refill the shelf space I had originally made XD I’m going to be doing another unhaul soon so hopefully I can make more room!

The Mulan Trailer

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t overly excited at the fact at how much they were going to change it…but after seeing that trailer, after hearing Reflection as the background music…I am very much looking forward to seeing the full thing now!

I am an Audiobook Fanatic Now?!?!?

I’ve been using them to get through these romance books faster and I have to say listening to sexy scenes being read to you is a totally different experience from reading them yourself. October Wrap Up & November TBR | Life’s ruff.

Greetings readers!

Wow. October really did come to hurt me. And I’ll be honest November is not looking that bright either in terms of uni. I am honestly so overwhelmed just thinking about all the things I have to do. The end of the semester is only a month away and then exams! I have so much to do which is why my posting has been so sparse these past weeks. It will continue to be like that and it’s stressing me out because I am so behind on reviews! I promise to take it in stride though and not stress too much!

What Rendz Read

The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes
I really enjoyed this Mayan MG adventure! Mini Review!

Q: What godly power would you love to have? As much as my younger self would plead for an elemental kind of power, today's Rendz would really love to handle time and space. I'm fascinated by the idea of time and dimensional travel. Imagine hopping from one time to another from one world to another. Is that not cool???? But great godly power requires great godly responsibility and I think that power would be a lot to handle 😅. But then again gods can do whatever they want 😉, especially the Maya gods! Speaking of Maya gods (what a great transition, Rendz) Last night I finished The Storm Runner by @authorjcervantes and I am happy to say that I very much enjoyed it! It was fun, hilarious, outrageous and perfectly blends in Maya mythology. I loved spending time with Zane and the gang (Uncle Hondo is the coolest!) I'm so looking forward to reading the sequel, hopefully sooner rather than later! #hispanicheritagemonth #latinxheritagemonth #cuentosunidos #bookstagram #mgbooks #octobertbr #books #middlegrade #kidlit #bookishcanadians #fantasy #magic #mayamythology #readriordan #disneybooks #jccervantes #reader #bookstagrammer #igbooks #igreads #fiction

A Dash of Trouble by Anna Meriano
I ADORED THIS. Please read it! Mini Review!

Q: What power would you want to have as a witch? It's almost October and you know what that means? Spooky season! 👻 I love Halloween and all the magic, myth and mayhem that comes with it. I used to dress up as a witch almost every year as a kid and it soon became my staple costume! I can't wait for the movies to start playing on TV. Since I'm not a horror fan, I really prefer the cheesy, magical movies of Disney Channel 😂 I really can't do scary, I just like the magic of the season. I'm curious if you have a favourite Halloween movie? I'm super excited to pick up this book very soon! A Dash of Trouble features a family of witches, delicious treats, magic and mayhem so I know it will sweep me off my feet! #lovesugarmagic #adashoftrouble #annameriano #hispanicheritagemonth #latinxheritagemonth #cuentosunidos #bookstagram #mgbooks #octobertbr #books #middlegrade #kidlit #bookishcanadians #fantasy #magic #witches

Five Midnights by Ann Davila Cardinal
A really good Latinx horror novel! Review to come!

Q: What scary tales were you told as a kid? It's spooky season and it's the perfect time to read scary tales. Although I am not one for much spook I really enjoyed this recent YA horror set in Puerto Rico based around the myth of El Cuco and the mysterious deaths of five friends. I had a really great time reading this! It had a great cast of characters, very spooky scenes and some shocking twists! FIVE MIDNIGHTS by @anndavilacardinal is sure to keep you at the edge of your seat! Many thanks to @torteen for the review copy! BEN MOTHER FREAKING BARNES, AKA PRINCE CASPIAN IS GOING TO BE PLAYING THE DARKLING AND I ABSOLUTELY LOST MY SHIT THE DAY I FOUND OUT.
*Breathes*
What can I say, that hasn’t already been said? I am super excited for the show. I stalk all the actors’ Instagram accounts for updates. I even followed some update accounts because I am that obsessed. I love the memes and edits that have already come out!

Do I think they got the casting perfect? No. Am I a little disappointed? Yes. I don’t know how they would fix it, but it’s important to note that they’ve already made some mistakes.

Hispanic Heritage Month Wrap-Up

The first half of October was dedicated to getting my HHM TBR done and I am happy to say I read all four novels I wanted to read! I also put my face (well half of it) on Instagram so go follow my account to see me lol! I have to say of the four I read, A Dash of Trouble by Anna Meriano was my favourite! It was absolutely adorable and I loved everything about it!

I Bought A Signed First Edition of The Penderwicks

There can be miracles. I knew that the used bookstore I usually visit had a hardback copy of TP and I had no intention of buying it until I talked myself into doing so this month and to my absolute joy IT WAS SIGNED! I lost my shit in the store and my sister and mother were super embarrassed of me, but I was too happy to care. I think this book is one of my most prized possessions now!

TBR

I am in a serious romance mood. Don’t ask me why, this really sprung out of nowhere. BUT I still have a lot of ARCs to get to so I will try and find that balance!

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibert
Cold Falling White by G.S. Prendergast
A River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy
Song of a Crimson Flower by Julie C. Dao
The Collected Works of Gretchen Oyester by Cary Fagan

Q: What is your favourite season? Since I'm a summer baby, that is obviously my main answer. But I find something appealing about each season, really. I love the changing colours of fall, I love the holiday season and pristine white of winter, AND Spring means winter is finally over which is a blessing in Canada! Zero Repeat Forever by @gsprendergast takes place in a futuristic-Canada when an alien race invades! It follows Raven, a survivor and Eighth, a Nahx soldier through the many trials they encounter over the course of four seasons. I remember really enjoying myself when I read it the first time around and I look forward to rereading it before diving into the sequel, Cold Falling White! Many thanks to @simonschusterca for sending me these lovely review copies! #zerorepeatforever #coldfallingwhite #gsprendergast #reader #bookishcanadians #fantasy #youngadultbooks #dystopianfiction #canadianauthor #bookstagram #scifi #yabooks #books #reader #igreads #bookaddict #thenahxinvasions #arc #simonandschuster #bookstagrammer #teenreads

I don’t think it will all get done. I have a tough few weeks ahead with exams and final assignments. I’ll be honest, as I’m writing I’m fighting back against the crushing weight of a horrible day where I failed in more ways the one. I can only try again tomorrow. I’m glad I can find some comfort in my reading!

On that lovely note…Let me know what you think! How was your October? What were your favourite reads? What do you have planned for November?

Happy reading!

September Wrap-Up and October TBR // Wow school really slapped me this month and it’s about to backhand me too

Greetings readers!

Well, hi. It’s been a while, hasn’t it. We are well into October and this is my first post of the month. Huh. Well the reason why is pretty much in the title of the post.

It’s that time of the year, it’s the mid-term time of year when readings, assignments and tests all start piling up and try to drown you. Then there is this very small grace period where you can breathe until the pile starts growing again. That grace period just so happens to be this week.

So I have to get in all my blogging in nowww.

That means starting by wrapping up last month!

Q: What 2020 books are on your radar?

I CANNOT EXPRESS TO YOU GUYS HOW EXCITED I WAS WHEN THIS POPPED UP IN MY MAIL ON MONDAY!

I mean... LOOK AT THE COVER!

WOVEN IN MOONLIGHT by @isabelwriter09 is a a YA Bolivian fantasy about magic, romance and revolución!!! While the announcement for this book came out ages ago and the pub date was pushed we are slowly inching towards its release! I am very grateful for having received an advanced copy and I hope to dive into this #HispanicHeritageMonth! (Because of course!) Many thanks to @mandagroup for the ARC!

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

HAPPY (Belated) BOOK BIRTHDAY TO @lauraeweymouth and her new novel, A TREASON OF THORNS!

Naturally (because I suck) I'm two days late to the party, but I am still within release week so it's all good!

I cannot express how much I loved Weymouth's debut novel, The Light Between Worlds (its AMAZING) so I am very much hoping to love this one just as much!

It has a magical house. I mean. A. Magical. House. The only thing that could possibly be as great as a magical wardrobe is a MAGICAL HOUSE!

Q: What is your favourite genre?
Oh look, it's me.

I figured that if I were to ever "show my face" on here it woud have to be during #HispanicHeritageMonth!
Today's featured book is Nocturna by Maya Motayne! It's the first ever Latinx fantasy that I read, based specifically on Dominican culture, and I'm very happy I enjoyed it! I'm even more glad I got to meet Maya when she came to Toronto earlier this year!

If there is one thing I hope to see in the bookish universe one day, it's a Latinx fantasy based on Salvadoran culture! I can only imagine what it could be like, but I'm very hopeful that one day I'll get that book! Who wouldn't wish to see their own culture reflected in their favourite genre?

HHM TBR (The End Game)

Five Midnights by Ann Dávila Cardinal
Love Sugar Magic: A Dash of Trouble by Anna Meriano
Prime Meridian by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Q: What power would you want to have as a witch?

It's almost October and you know what that means? Spooky season! 👻

I love Halloween and all the magic, myth and mayhem that comes with it.

The Regular TBR–My Dedication to Penguin Teen CA

The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh
Grave Maidens by Kelly Coon
A River of Royal Blood by Amanda by Amanda Joy
Fireborne by Rosaria Munda
Song of a Crimson Flower by Julie C. Dao

Q: What was your first vampire read?

I was about 12 years old when I read my first vampire book. It was called Ruling Passion, a bind up of the first three books in Alyxandra Harvey's Drake Chronicles.

You can bet that I got obsessed real quick. I was never a fan of the main main character but her best friend, Lucy was great. And I'm like 80% sure it's set in Canada. This is a series I still think about to this day. I never quite finished them but I've had the nostalgic feeling of wanting to reread them, but it's six books long with lots of novellas.

ON ANOTHER NOTE: Vampire YA is making a comeback and I have my hands on a coveted ARC of The Beautiful by @reneeahdieh!!! (Many thanks to @penguinteenca for making this possible)
I can't wait to be whisked away my Renée's work again!

August Wrap-Up & September TBR | Where nothing went as planned!

Greetings readers!

Well, well, well. Here we are. Another month, another bunch of hauled books, another unfinished TBR. But what’s actually new?

I actually think that this month was hugely successful for me in terms of reading. I might have said “F**k it” to my planned TBR but what I did read was so much fun and I don’t have (m)any regrets.

As for next month…..hooooweeee do I have *planz*

What Rendz Read

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
I absolutely loved this book. AMAZING! My Full Review

Gods of Jade and Shadow

The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young
While it did not live up to the standards of Sky in the Deep in my opinion, it was still okay. My Full Review

The Girl the Sea Gave Back

The Caged Queen by Kristen Ciccarelli
Buddy read with Sha @ Book Princess Reviews! This was such a fun companion novel but Sha and I have THOUGHTS. Review to come.

Q: Who are you favourite warrior characters?

It's #WarriorWednesday on #bookishcanadiansaug19 and so I've decided to feature some fierce female fighters on the gram today!

@kristenciccarelli's Iskari series is such a delight and it is full of warrior characters to love and enjoy (and some to love to hate 😉)! Asha and Roa are two characters who you will definitely LOVE. They are so stubborn and passionate and fierce and kickasss!!! I cannot wait until we get to read Safire's book who could literally kick my butt in a millisecond. Then again, they all could!

My fellow Canadian buddy reader, @shaniasquires and I are so looking forward to seeing where the story goes next and we hope you pick up these books soon!

BELOW

The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth (Audiobook)
I already loved the story, but the audiobook just made the whole experience so much MORE. 5 stars.

Q: Do you listen to audiobooks?

I don't usually. I have a very short attention span so my mind tends to wander when I'm listening to anything. You name it: lectures, music, stories from friends... I miss lots of things.

But I recently decide to give audiobooks another try since I felt like it! I found the audio for THE LIGHT BETWEEN WORLDS on the Overdrive app, downloaded it and started listening to it at 1 a.m. one night.

It was probably the best decision I ever made. I had already read TLBW last year so I knew the story, but listening to it was a totally different experience! It was truly magical and I cried. I sobbbeeddddd.

I was literally lying in my bed at 1 or 2 in the morning having my heart torn out, tears running down my eyes and onto my pillows. And I mean it when I say this is one of the best decisions I ever made. I already loved the story but the audio was definitely a great listen!

5 🌟s for the story!
5 🌟s for the narration!

The Clock Work Scarab by Colleen Gleason
The Spiritglass Charade by Colleen Gleason
The Chess Queen Enigma by Colleen Gleason
The Carnelian Crow by Colleen Gleason

Q: What's the oddest/greatest book pitch that has ever grabbed your full attention?

For me it was Sherlock Holmes meets Vampire Hunters.

Let that sink in.

The Stoker & Holmes series by Colleen Gleason follows the niece of Sherlock Holmes, Mina and Bram Stoker's (author of Dracula!) sister, Evaline through a steampunk 1889 London.

I know it may sound odd but it's a very fun series. There are lots of mysteries to be solved, the characters are incredible and there's romance to be had. In fact this series holds the only love triangle-kind of thing that I fully accept!

But the stars of the show are definitely Mina and Evaline who are so different and yet grow a friendship--even if they're reluctant to be friends at first!

It's a 5-book series and the last one came out last week! I'm currently reading the fourth and cannot wait to read the final book! (Hopefully my library will grant my request soon!!) They are quick and easy to read through and I promise you'll have some fun!

I Re-Watched Violet Evergarden

Still one of the best and most emotional animes I have ever watched! It is on Netflix so there is no excuse for you to not watch it (unless you don’t have Netflix of course!). Seriously. I SOBBED. SOBBED. AND I ALREADY KNEW THE STORYLINE.

I Entered Marissa Meyer’s Fan Art Contest!

I took a gander at entering since it was open to Canada and I had free time on my hands! I can’t say it came out exactly how I had hoped, but I still am super proud of some of its elements.

I Attended Another Frenzy Event

As usual I was my anti-social self, although this time I did talk to a few people!! So maybe not my usual self, but still!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a lot of fun at the event and I got my hands on my most anticipated book of September!!!!

It’s Back to School

September marks the beginning of the school year so it’s time I gear up and be ready to study. I’ll still be reading, though perhaps not as much as this past month.

TBR

Holy cow. I have so many things I need to read. I seriously don’t know how I’m going to get to this all. I mean I know I am not going to get to it all, but I at least thought I’d try.

I technically will have two TBRs this month because #HispanicHeritageMonth runs from Sept 15-Oct 15 so I need to get ready!

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes
Love Sugar Magic: A Dash of Trouble by Anna Meriano
Five Midnights by Ann Dávila Cardinal

It should be fun to see myself fail at all of this.

July Wrap-Up & August TBR | I blinked, July ended and now it’s August???

Greetings readers!

Here we are, after quite a while. Life has been a little bit crazy this past week for some personal reasons that I’ll mention later, but I’m backish…

I’ll be honest, blogging will be kind of slow for me for the next week or two. It doesn’t help that I am behind on a lot of posts and I read faster than I write!

As for this wrap-up…it’s gonna be short considering its only accounting for the last two weeks of July after my vacation!

OH MY GOODNESS. THIS BOOK WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I ADORED IT. A REVIEW WITH MY FULL THOUGHTS IS COMING EVENTUALLY.

Other Going Ons

I watched The Lion King Live Action

Well yes…live action is a stretch. It’s still an animated version just more realistic. And I enjoyed myself, I did. Was it absolutely mind blowing? Mmm no. Why? I’m sure you’ve heard other people say it, it’s the lack of emotion on the faces that really got me. The voices were fine, it was the exaggeration in the eyes and mouths that I missed. Otherwise, most of the iconic lines were there. Notice I say most and not all. It was a good adaptation and it truly stayed faithful for the most part but I still feel like it was missing something.

I went to an Amusement Park

It has been years since I last went to an amusement park. I’m lucky to live not too far from one since it lies just on the outskirts of the city. If you didn’t know, I love–ABSOLUTELY ADORE–rollercoasters and thrill rides. Everything that goes fast is my perfect cup of tea! It was such an amazing day.

I Got My Wisdom Teeth Removed

Hence my recent absence. It wasn’t too painful but I just haven’t had the energy to write or stare at the computer for long. I am still going at it slow, but hopefully within the coming week I will have some more posts coming up!

TBR

I honestly have a plan that I 100% know I am not going to be able to stick to. Why? Because I have my moods and lots of these books are big, but it’s my last month before I go back to school so I am trying to make the absolute most of it!

The Girl the Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool
Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter
The Caged Queen by Kristen Ciccarelli
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

Lol Rendz. You think far too highly of yourself.

Q: How ambitious do you get with your tbrs?

Because I am always tooooo ambitious. Take a look at my stack for August. Take a good look.

Now add in another hardcover about the size of The Ten Thousand doors of January and add in another two paperbacks about the thickness of The Girl the Sea Gave Back.

Because that is what my TBR actually looks like and this photo is a lie.

Of course I want to get to all of these books but I just know I won't so... Here we are.

I'd love to hear what you'd pick to read if you were faced with this monstrous stack!
